NAACP Pres.: Obama Remark Perpetuated Stereotypes

The president of the South Carolina NAACP didn’t think a remark by Democra tic presidential candidate Barack Obama was particularly funny.

Obama offered a test of sorts for the notion that Bill Clinton was, in the words of author Toni Morrison, the nation's first black president. During the debate in Myrtle Beach, Obama said he wanted to know if Clinton could dance.

He was joking, playing to an audience ready to laugh after the earlier sharpness of the debate between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

But not everyone thought the quip was funny. State NAACP President Lonnie Randolph said Obama would have been a lot better off not perpetuating any stereotypes.
