Ponor Gets Two Gold Medals In Gymnastics

Athens, Greece -- Catalina Ponor of Romania won two gold medals Monday night, finishing first in the women's floor exercise and balance beam.Meanwhile, American Carly Patterson, the women's all-around champion at the Summer Games, added another medal with a silver on the beam Ponor won the gold medal on the beam with a score of 9.787, while Patterson's total was 9.775. Alexandra Georgiana Eremia of Romania won bronze with a 9.700 mark. American Courtney Kupets finished in fifth. Ponor then captured the floor exercise gold with a score of 9.750, just ahead of teammate Nicoleta Daniela Sofronie's mark of 9.562. Spain's Patricia Moreno was third with a score of 9.487. Mohini Bhardwaj of the U.S. finished in sixth place. Spain's Gervasio Deferr won the gold medal in the men's vault competition with a score of 9.737. Evgeni Sapronenko of Latvia won the silver medal with a score of 9.706, while Marian Dragulescu of Romania took the bronze with a total of 9.612. Valeri Goncharov of the Ukraine won the gold medal in the men's parallel bars with a mark of 9.787. Japan's Hiroyuki Tomita was second with a score of 9.775, while Li Xiaopeng of China was third with 9.762. American Paul Hamm, the controversial all-around winner earlier at these Games, finished seventh. The men's high bar competition is currently taking place.
