St. Louis, MO -- (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Blues retired the No. 2 worn by defenseman Al MacInnis before Sunday's game against Edmonton.MacInnis, who skated for the Blues in nine seasons following a 1994 trade from Calgary, is the fifth player to have his number honored by the club. He joins Bob Gassoff (No. 3), Barclay Plager (No. 8 ), Brian Sutter (No. 11) and Bernie Federko (No. 24) in the group. "It was the name of these four men that reminded me that playing for the Blues is as good as it gets to play in the NHL," said MacInnis. "I am deeply touched that my number will grace the halls of the Savvis Center with such great players. I am privileged to join them." Best known for his thunderous slap shot, which won him seven hardest-shot titles in the NHL skills contest, MacInnis spent his first 13 seasons in Calgary, which drafted him in the first round (15th overall) of the 1981 draft, and won the Conn Smythe when the team won the Stanley Cup in 1989. Traded to St. Louis after the 1994 season, he spent his last nine years playing for the Blues before retiring after the 2003 season and was awarded the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman in 1998-99. The 43-year-old MacInnis tallied 340 goals and 934 assists in 1,416 career NHL games. His point total of 1,274 ranks third all-time among defensemen, only trailing Hall of Famers Ray Bourque (1,579) and Paul Coffey (1,531).
