Blues Make Qualifying Offer To Pronger

POSTED: 9:57 pm EDT July 27, 2005

The St. Louis Blues Wednesday made a qualifying offer to star defenseman Chris Pronger and 11 other players.

St. Louis now has the right to match any contract proposal received by Pronger or accept a compensatory draft pick instead.

Pronger, who captured the NHL's MVP award and the Norris Trophy as best defenseman in 2000, registered 14 goals and 40 assists in 80 games during the 2003-04 season. The blueliner played just five games of the 2002-03 campaign while recovering from wrist and knee surgeries.

The Blues' captain from 1997-2000, Pronger was drafted second overall by the Hartford Whalers in 1993. He was dealt to St. Louis two years later for Brendan Shanahan.

In 722 career games with the Whalers and Blues, Pronger has registered 94 goals and 306 assists.

St. Louis also made offers to forwards Eric Boguniecki, Jamal Mayers, Ryan Johnson, Mark Rycroft, Peter Sejna, Mike Glumac and Colin Hemingway and defensemen Bryce Salvador, Trevor Byrne, Brett Scheffelmaier and Mike Stuart.
