Crosby's OT Goal Sends Penguins Over Panthers

POSTED: 1:32 am EST November 24, 2009

(Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby scored on the power play 3:07 into overtime after Michael Rupp netted the equalizer late in the third, as the Penguins cooled off the Florida Panthers in a 3-2 victory.

Evgeni Malkin finished with two assists while Pascal Dupuis also scored for Pittsburgh, which has won four of five. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 19-of-21 shots in the win.

"We didn't get a lot of power play time in the game," said Penguins coach Dan Bylsma. "But the guys stuck with it and got the puck to the net, which is what we were talking about."

Nathan Horton and Keith Ballard scored for the Panthers, who had won five of six. However, they still earned a point and are 5-0-2 in their last seven contests, with the last regulation loss coming on November 7 against Washington.

Tomas Vokoun stopped 42-of-45 shots in the setback.

"We slowed down a bit in the third and it was almost like we were just trying to hang on," said Ballard. "But we didn't cause we gave them too many chances and it didn't go our way."

Trailing by one down the stretch, the Penguins peppered Vokoun with shot after shot, registering 16 total in the third period, compared to just three for Florida. Vokoun was stellar in net, but with under three minutes left Malkin had possession behind the net, and the puck squirted out front by the left post.

Rupp was there in front of the crease to bang home the goal to make it a 2-2 game with 2:32 remaining.

The contest went to overtime, and early on Vokoun made a quick glove save on a Malkin wrister from the right circle.

But at the 1:25 mark, the Penguins gained a 4-on-3 after Horton was called for high-sticking. Vokoun stuffed a one-timer shortly into the power play, but the Penguins caught him out of position near the end of the man advantage, and Crosby buried a one-timer from the right side to win the game.

The Panthers got the game's first goal late in the first period. Stephen Weiss skated with the puck into the right circle, then wheeled around and sent a cross-ice pass to Horton, who lifted a shot into the net with 2:27 remaining.

Ballard's first goal of the season came at the 10:21 mark of the middle period to make it a 2-0 game, but the Penguins got a fortunate bounce in the third to trim their deficit.

Dupuis put a shot on net that bounced into the air before appearing to hit Vokoun's stick and shoulder before heading to the goal. At the same time the puck was heading for the goal line, players collided in the crease and crashed into the net, knocking it off its moorings and forcing a review of the score.

However, the goal call was upheld, getting Pittsburgh within one just 4:49 into the final period.

Game Notes
