Glendale, AZ -- (Sports Network) - Mike Comrie scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Phoenix Coyotes to a 5-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.Comrie also scored in regulation along with Derek Morris, Ed Jovanovski and Owen Nolan for Phoenix, which won for the first time in four games (1-2-1). Mikael Tellqvist allowed four goals on 25 shots in the win. Rick Nash tallied a goal and two assists for Columbus, which fell one win shy of matching a franchise record for consecutive victories. The Blue Jackets had won five straight entering this contest, but registered a point for the seventh time in their last nine games (6-2-1). Anson Carter, Sergei Fedorov and David Vyborny also scored in the losing effort while Fredrik Norrena made 25 saves in the losing effort. All three Columbus players and the first two for Phoenix missed in the shootout, which led to Comrie. He skated in, dipped his shoulder in the low slot and fired a wrist shot that trickled through Norrena's pads for the game- winner. Phoenix center Jeremy Roenick was benched for the game by head coach Wayne Gretzky. The colorful Roenick left the arena unhappy before Tuesday's game against Vancouver after he was scratched due to back spasms. Roenick felt healthy enough to play and thus showed his displeasure with the decision by not staying to watch his team play. The unofficial suspension is believed to be only this one game. The teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the game. After Carter's sixth goal at the 1:04 mark, Morris answered one minute later. Fredrik Sjostrom held the puck along the right side and curled toward the half-wall a pass back to the right point, where Morris ripped home a one-timer. Each team scored three goals in a see-saw middle session. First, at 1:24, Nolan scored his seventh goal of the season for a 2-1 Phoenix edge. With Phoenix skating short-handed, Zbynek Michalek sent the puck from his own goal line into the neutral zone and Nolan picked it up, streaked down the right-wing side and, from inside the circle, ripped home a blazing slap shot that made the goaltender's water bottle jump. A nice individual effort by Nash made it 2-2 at the 5:13 mark. Following a Phoenix shot that hit the post, the Jackets came back the other way on an odd- man rush. Nash carried the disc down the left-wing side, cut into the low slot and pushed a backhander past Tellqvist. Over three minutes later, Comrie gave the hosts a one-goal lead. Ladislav Nagy's shot from the slot was saved by Norrena, but Comrie punched home the rebound from the right post. After Jovanovski gave the Coyotes a 4-2 lead with a goal from the slot at 13:19, Columbus responded with two goals inside the final three minutes of the period that created a 4-4 deadlock after 40 minutes of action. The visitors returned the favor from earlier in the contest with a short- handed tally by Fedorov. Jovanovski pinched in at the right point, but could not keep the puck inside the blue line and Nash was able to muster it into the neutral zone, where Fedorov gained control. The veteran sniper then skated in on a breakaway and fired home a wrist shot with 2:50 to go. Nash again played a key role in the next Columbus goal. His work along the left half-wall kept the puck in the zone and he controlled it, curled toward the net and sent a pass inside the left circle. Vyborny was in perfect position and his snap shot lit the lamp at 18:55. Game Notes Columbus defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen left the game with a facial injury he suffered during a scrum in the second period...Phoenix improved to 6-0-1 in its last seven home games....The Coyotes were 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Blue Jackets went scoreless on five chances with the extra skater...Attendance was 11,301.
