Kansas City, MO -- (Sports Network) - Kolby Smith ran six times for 38 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Kansas City Chiefs over St. Louis, 21-17, in the teams' final preseason game.

Brodie Croyle completed three of four passing attempts for 42 yards in a limited day for all Chiefs quarterbacks. Damon Huard finished 2-for-2 with a score, while Tyler Thigpen went 0-for-6 under center for Kansas City (2-2) in a game that was delayed at the outset by a rain and wind storm.

Dantrell Savage finished with 21 yards rushing on 11 attempts, while Jackie Battle ran nine times for 55 yards for the Chiefs, who finished with just 205 net yards. Kansas City opens its regular season on September 7 with a major test at New England.

Brock Berlin went 13-for-21 passing for 107 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (2-2), while Bruce Gradkowski completed 11 of his 18 passes for 105 yards and was intercepted once.

Lance Ball rushed 13 times for 70 yards and a score, while Dane Looker caught three passes for 32 yards and one touchdown. St. Louis begins its regular season on September 7, at Philadelphia.

Josh Brown's 35-yard field goal gave the Rams a slim lead less than two minutes into the game, but the Chiefs put up a couple of scores in the first quarter to take the lead.

On the drive after Brown's field goal, Smith took the bulk of rushes. After an 11-yard burst brought the ball down to the St. Louis 19-yard line, an offsides penalty against the Rams brought the Chiefs five yards closer, and Smith went 14 yards into the end zone.

After St. Louis went three-and-out, Jamaal Charles was the primary rusher for the Chiefs and went for runs of nine, 13 and 10 yards. Smith ended that drive, a nine-play surge, with a four-yard burst up the middle to make it 14-3.

Kansas City took that lead into the second quarter, and the Chiefs took possession on the St. Louis 31-yard line thanks to a Rams fumble. A Rams penalty then brought the ball down to the 11, where on the first play, Huard found Bobby Sippio for another Chiefs score and a 21-3 advantage.

In the final minute of the half, Berlin found Looker for a 20-yard score to cut St. Louis' deficit to 11 going into the intermission.

Late in the third quarter, Gradkowski took the quarterback reins and guided the Rams to the Kansas City 13 before the stanza ended. Two plays into the fourth, Ball rushed a short two yards into the end zone to bring St. Louis within four. However, the Rams didn't get past midfield the rest of the game as Kansas City held on for the win.
