Heather Unruh is co-anchor of WCVB-TV/DT’s early evening and late newscasts. Before assuming her current role in March of 2008, Unruh was co-anchor of the EyeOpener and NewsCenter 5 at 5. She has also served as medical reporter. Unruh joined the station in June 2001.

Unruh has anchored breaking news coverage for major events including the Rhode Island Nightclub Tragedy, London bombings, Cardinal Law’s resignation and the War in Iraq. She is also an award-winning reporter. Unruh won the American Cancer Society’s Sword of Hope Award in 2005 for her poignant depiction of Karen Grant, a young woman with a rare lung cancer. She was also nominated for a regional Emmy Award.

Prior to joining WCVB, Unruh was the early evening anchor and medical reporter at KFOR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Oklahoma City. During her time at KFOR, Unruh earned more than a half-dozen honors, including best medical reporting, from local groups including the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the regional Associated Press. In 1999, the DePauw University graduate received the Clarion Award from Women in Communications, Inc., and the Gracie Allen Award from the American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT). Most notably, Unruh received the top national recognition from the AWRT, the “Grand Gracie,” for excellence in reporting.

Unruh has also worked as a weekend anchor and medical reporter at WVTM-TV in Birmingham, AL, where she earned an Emmy Award and several honors from the local Associated Press. In the early 1990s, Unruh served as an anchor/reporter and host and producer of public affairs programs at both WBNG-TV and WMGC-TV in Binghamton, N.Y. She also hosted and produced a public affairs series at WVEU-TV in Atlanta.

Throughout her career, Unruh has been actively involved with many charitable organizations. She is on the Regional Board of Directors for the American Heart Association and is actively involved with Boston Medical Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Center.

Unruh’s interest in broadcast journalism began early when, as a student, she interned at NewsCenter 5. Spending many summers on Nantucket, and eventually holding her wedding on the island, left her with a love of New England. Unruh resides in a Boston suburb with her husband and two children.
