The region is bracing for temperatures that could soar above 100 degrees this week.

NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported that Boston has already declared a heat emergency. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning, which will be in effect from Tuesday at noon until Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The Boston city pools will be open for extended hours to help provide relief to residents.

But some people, including construction workers, cannot avoid the brutal heat.

"You put on your sun block and make sure you have plenty of fluids," one worker said.

"It is hot. What are you going to do?" said one Bostonian.

Experts said residents should watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

"What we look for first of all is fever and signs of either altered mental status and the worst patients become very lethargic," said Dr. Ted Benzer, of Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Glen Miller concert scheduled for Wednesday on City Hall Plaza has been canceled due to heat.
