A Hanover man was in court Monday, accused of kidnapping and trying to rape a 6-year-old neighborhood girl who was a friend of his own two children. Police found "sexual bondage material" in the man's apartment, according to court documents.

Justin Shine appears in Hingham District Court. More
Justin Shine, 26, pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, attempted rape, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest in Hingham District Court on Monday. He was ordered held without bail until a dangerousness hearing on July 1.

Police alleged he grabbed the girl Saturday while she was riding her bike at the Hanover Woods apartment complex on Franks Lane.

"She heard the defendant yell from the apartment window and ask her if she wanted to come in and look at some gerbils or some guinea pigs," prosecutor Sharon Donotelle said.

Once inside, prosecutors said Shine taped the child's mouth and hands and shackled her feet.

Donotelle said an assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge pertains to a syringe she said he used to inject the girl with unknown substance.

"She was, while in his custody, injected in the hip with a syringe. What was in that syringe is yet to be determined," Donotelle said.

Donotelle also said investigators found Shine's blood on the girl.

"He did admit to the officer that he had plans to engage in some sexual activity with the child but that he apparently had second thoughts about it," Donotelle said.

Prosecutors said Shine told the girl she "wasn't going to die today," but he was.

Officers, who had been called by the girl's mother when she couldn't find her daughter, said she led them to Shine's apartment.

When officers searched Shine's apartment, they found a pink bicycle, a Barbie bicycle helmet on the kitchen table and "sexual bondage material on the floor," which included ropes or chains, according to the police report.

When police found Shine covered with blood in the bathroom of the master bedroom, he lunged at officers, and the arresting officer hit Shine over the head with his service weapon, according to the police report.

Shine has two children of his own, ages 6 and 8, with ex-girlfriend Holly Hersh, who said she was devastated.

"That poor little girl has to suffer for the rest of her life," Hersh said, sobbing. "My children have to suffer for the rest of their lives. I can't go back and live here."

She said she kicked Shine out of the house several weeks ago because of drug problems, but said he broke in over the weekend.

"It was a very traumatic event for a 6-year-old child to go through. And she escaped, and, hopefully, she will be OK. But I am sure it is going to be a long road for her," Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said.
