BOSTON -- The Hood blimp crashed into a wooded area of Manchester-by-the-Sea Tuesday. The 90-foot-long airship left Beverly Municipal Airport at about 12:15 p.m. Shortly after, the pilot started to have problems, and he tried to land on Singing Beach, but instead got caught in some trees near Brookwood Road. The pilot, Leigh Bradbury, was not injured."This was a controlled landing. The nice thing about blimps is that they are very safe, and if there's an instance where a pilot needs to land, they can control the landing and look for a safe landing place. Pilot can use wind and can control helium level to land safety. It is too early to determine the cause or the extent of damage to the aircraft," said a spokesman for The Lightship Group, which owns the blimp. The blimp is a familiar feature at a number of Massachusetts sporting events, including Boston Red Sox games at Fenway Park.NewsCenter 5 and TheBostonChannel.com will have more information when it becomes available.
