SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- Nearly a year after a crash killed two sisters, one MetroWest town has come up with a new strategy to tackle the problem of underage drinking at house parties.NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that Southborough's Shauna and Megan Murphy, 17 and 15, respectively, died in a car accident last year after attending a party in neighboring Northborough."These things just are not supposed to happen," said Southborough Police Chief William Webber.
Police said Shauna Murphy was drinking before she got behind the wheel. Webber said the fatal crash is just the kind of situation his new policy is designed to prevent."You just want to do as much as you can to make sure it doesn't happen again. We'd be naïve to think it's not going to happen again. It certainly, if it doesn't happen here, will happen somewhere else," Webber said.Webber said under the new policy, officers who respond to parties or situations in which underage drinking has been reported will test teens for sobriety, and those who have been drinking will be taken into custody. Those who supplied the alcohol will face criminal penalties.Webber said the policies are patterned after those in existence in Kansas, California, Colorado, Michigan and Florida."We hope that is something that the neighboring towns can take and we can all be on the same page," Webber said.Webber will present his proposals to the Southborough Board of Selectmen on Sept. 26.
