Man Faces 15th DUI ChargePolice: Scheller Still Had Valid LicensePOSTED: 6:20 pm EDT September 13,
2006 MARSHFIELD, Mass. -- A man who has been charged with drunken driving 14 times was arrested and charged again with drunken driving in Marshfield on Tuesday.NewsCenter 5's David Boeri reported that Robert Scheller, 56, was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing next week.Scheller was arrested near the Daniel Webster Elementary School as children were walking on the sidewalk."He came in the morning and I did serve him," said storeowner Keith Whitaker.Whitaker said Scheller returned to his store later that day."Around 3 o'clock or so, I felt without question that he had been drinking. The way he was walking and slurring his words, there as no way I was going to serve him. So I refused him and he said he'd go somewhere else," he said.Whitaker then alerted police.Police said Scheller was driving on the wrong side of the road, crossing lanes and speeding."And the fact that he was driving through a school zone, an elementary school zone, at the time school was getting out just makes it that much more disturbing," said Marshfield police Lt. Phil Tavaras. When he was arrested, police said Scheller could not stand straight or tell them where he lived."They found him to be extremely intoxicated and he was placed under arrest. And then we conducted an investigation to find out what number offense it was and we were shocked at the results," said Tavaras.Scheller was convicted of drunken driving in 1977, twice in 1983, twice in 1989 and once in 2000 in Massachusetts. He also has convictions in Colorado, Virginia, West Virginia and Florida."He had a valid driver's license. That question I cannot answer," said Tavaras."It is amazing that he is still driving," said Whitaker. The Registry of Motor Vehicles did not return NewsCenter 5's requests for a comment on the case.Under Melanie's Law, Scheller could go to jail and lose his license forever.
