Reporter's Column: Shocked By The System

By Rhondella Richardson

The idea that someone could be struck by lightning twice is unbelievable right? It just doesn't, shouldn't, happen. That was our reaction at Team 5 and part of the reason we waited so long to air this one, checking over a period of months every outlet of information.

Initially, when members of the family made me aware of their plight, they really didn't want to go on camera. They believed the state would do right by them and pay them for the injury and loss of work hours etc. They waited for weeks for some settlement and resolution. As they waited, they requested documents and they went to every doctor's appointment the state required. They finally agreed to do an on camera interview because they told me they were afraid for everyone else still working at the Gardner North Central Correctional Institution. They feared someone else would be hurt in the next thunderstorm.

When they found out that the firebox that allegedly put Barrette at risk had been recently replaced and the place was safe, they were pleased the problem was corrected but outraged -- because officials were still denying their second claim -- saying nothing went wrong that stormy July night back in 2005.

The family is not receiving any money from the Department of Corrections but has filed a lawsuit for payback and retirement disability.

The family believes Barrette is now listed at the DOC as receiving I.A insurance money, but they say they're not receiving any Industrial Accident money.

When we tried to ask the Department of Correction specific questions, it was apparent they were not clear of the facts, hadn't fully investigated nor even interviewed Barrette about the second lightning strike. They were, however, quick to cancel his paychecks.

A September hearing investigating all documents associated with the industrial accident should be ENLIGHTENING. The family is hoping for justice as more details should be revealed then. We will continue to follow this story.
