ATM Guidelines Can Differ Overseas

Consumers Urged To Check With Banks Before Trip

If you're planning to be away for at least part of the summer, and if you are like a lot of people, you'll be using your ATM card.

NewsCenter 5's Susan Wornick reported that there are things to know before you go.

Different banks have different policies. For example, with Bank of America, if you're traveling overseas, the bank needs to know details before you go -- such as where you're going and how long you'll be traveling. Otherwise, they may block your transactions for fear of fraud.

When you call, they'll likely also tell you to pick a new four-digit PIN because many overseas ATMs don't accept anything else.

Even if you're not traveling out of the country, it's important to check in with your bank -- especially if you're planning on using your card for big purchases, such as hotel rooms.

Some banks, such as Citizens, have a daily limit on how much you can charge or how much cash you can take. You don't want to find that out by mistake.
