BOSTON -- Water damaged a painting at the Statehouse in Boston, where lawmakers were dripping with comments on Wednesday.NewsCenter 5's Janet Wu reported that a leaky roof or damaged drainpipes may be to blame for damaging a historic mural that hangs in the building. The corner of the mural starting curling off the wall on Thursday."They may have to take the entire roof off and do an inspection of the entire area above the dome and above the chamber to find out where the leaks are," Rep. Salvatore DiMasi said. "It's expensive.""I think it could well lead to the relocation of the Legislative body for a while if, indeed, the whole roof needs to be reopened. It's the season. Such an action would need to be during the milder months of the year, and that's the time of year when the Legislature is here and fairly active," Secretary of State William Galvin said.Galvin is chairman of the Massachusetts Historic Commission. He said that the mural is a series of five murals that were painted in 1942 by Albert Herter -- the father of former Gov. Christian Herter. The painting depicts then Gov. John Winthrop arriving in Salem Harbor with the original Massachusetts Charter."That's the way incumbent governors have been leaving the Statehouse lately -- leaking underneath," Lowell Sun Columnist Paul Sullivan said. The mural sits next to the reporters' gallery."It's the balcony where all the reporters are sitting, and so, therefore, we are used to the leaks coming from the reporters in the gallery," DiMasi said.
