Police are investigating the slaying of an East Falmouth woman.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported Monday that Winifred Moniz, 73, was found dead shortly after noon Monday in her home on John Parker Road. The victim's husband was mowing the lawn at the time of the alleged attack.

"Police and fire responded to the location and transported Winifred Moniz," Falmouth Police Department Sgt. Douglas DeCosta. "She was transported to the Falmouth Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed by the medical examiner's office out of Boston. The matter is being investigated as a criminal act, perpetrated by another."

"I heard that there was some kind of incident. Someone was stabbed. It might have resulted in a murder. I don't know," resident Conan Wieden said.

Friends said that the victim and her husband are well known in the area.

"They are beautiful people. They do everything for everybody," said Mary Servis, one of the victim's friends. "I've known her for 35 years. They were born and raised here."
