Impact Statements Continue In Nightclub Fire

Band Manager Could Face Up To 10 Years In Prison

Prosecutors read statements Tuesday from some of the families of those killed in The Station nightclub fire during the second day in the sentencing hearing of Great White band manager Daniel Biechle.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Biechle, who set off the pyrotechnics that ignited the February 2003 fire, will be sentenced Wednesday on 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Members of the prosecution staff spoke for families who were unable to deliver their victim impact statements. Prosecutor Randy White read a letter from Jennifer Young, who lost her husband, Robert.

"I would never be able to see him again to say goodbye. Now, I only have that gold band that helped bring my husband home for me to hold on to," White said. "You like to think you would know when you are going to speak or see someone for the last time, but in a moment, it was all carelessly taken away."

"That's what I never get back -- a picture with him. Never the four of us will be in a picture again, and that's what I need. I need my brother back. I need that picture to be whole again. It is never going to be that way, and Mr. Biechle made it that way. He brought a loaded gun into the club that night and killed 100 people in one shot," said Jody King, the brother of one of the victims.

"Since this happened, I am a single mom now," Heidi Longley said. "It is really hard because my son has never known his father. We never got to go to ultrasounds together. We'll never have a family portrait. We'll never have any of that, and it's not fair."

Biechle is expected to testify Wednesday and urge the judge to sentence him to community service.

"You hear arguments about community service. We'll make a far different argument tomorrow," Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch said.
