BOSTON -- A Danvers nursing home provided free gas to its staff Tuesday to thank workers for their cost-saving efforts.NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported that the directors of the Harborside Cedar Glen Rehabilitation and Nursing Center pumped gas for staff members at Global Gas on High Street. About 300 employees received $30 worth of gas."I think it's a great idea. I think every company should do this for their employees," worker Susan Legere said.During the past year, workers have been able to significantly reduce the number of workers' compensation claims at the facility, so their cost-saving efforts are being rewarded."They didn't believe it was going to happen, but it did. We are having a good time," Cedar Glen nursing director Edith Machado said."We wanted to thank our team for these efforts that are being returned to the employees in this most unusual way, and we thought that this was an excellent way to express our appreciation," Cedar Glen administrator Frank Silvia said. The company worked out a bulk discount with the station, but the nursing home still expects to spend $3,000 on the gas. Administrators consider it an investment."My average tenure for a nurse is seven and a half years, which is unheard of," Silvia said."It's huge. They often do nice things. I've been there 15 years. I can't imagine being anywhere else," worker Terry Sanger said.
