Slain Oklahoma Girl Remembered At Funeral

Suspect Faces Death Penalty

Family and classmates said their final goodbyes Thursday to a 10-year-old Oklahoma girl who authorities said was killed by a man who planned to eat her corpse.

Mourners are trying to set aside the horror of Jamie's death and remember instead a friendly girl who liked to sing and watch movies. The funeral featured religious songs and a video tribute to Jamie Rose Bolin, who liked to sing and sew.

The pastor of a church in Purcell, Okla., suggested that "heaven needed another rose to add to its bouquet" when the little girl was killed.

Duane Elmore also told about 1,000 people who met Thursday in a high school gymnasium that "it only took her 10 years to earn her wings."

Prosecutors said a neighbor, 26-year-old Kevin Ray Underwood, killed Jamie and sexually abused the body. After drawing suspicion at a checkpoint, police said Underwood confessed and led them to the girl's body, which was stuffed in a container in his closet.

Underwood is charged with first-degree murder in Jamie's death. Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty.

A judge has entered a not guilty plea for Underwood.

Jamie's parents said their daughter had an inquisitive nature and loved everyone she met.

The Oklahoman spoke with Curtis Bolin and Jennifer Fox as they sorted through old photographs and memorabilia of Jamie for use in the memorial service.

Both have had little sleep since Jamie disappeared a week ago and was found dead two days later.

Fox -- a long-haul truck driver -- said she was driving through Arizona when Bolin contacted her and told her their child was missing. She said she stopped along an Interstate 40 shoulder and screamed.

Bolin said their child is in heaven with his father, James, for whom Jamie was named.

The auto dealership mechanic said he can no longer live at the apartment he and his daughter shared and plans to leave Purcell for Guthrie, where he can stay with relatives.

Bolin declined to comment on his daughter’s accused killer, but said he doesn't blame the man's family.

Searching Through Computers

State investigators searched Underwood's computer on Wednesday.

Authorities said they would focus on Underwood's writings, many of which had been posted to blogs across the Internet. In those, Underwood allegedly detailed some of his personal problems.

A judge issued a gag order in the case on Tuesday.

Special District Judge Gary Barger signed the order. It prohibits attorneys, investigators and police authorities from talking publicly about the case.

Defense attorneys said they asked for a gag order because officials had made inflammatory and prejudicial comments to the media.

Prosecutors didn't oppose the order.

Courthouse Outburst

Court records indicate a man arrested after shouting during a court hearing for Underwood was in jail himself last month.

As Kevin Underwood was in the McClain County Courthouse on Monday being arraigned, Bruce Steven Schwartz, of Elmore City, Okla., stood in a nearby hallway before rushing the courtroom.

Schwartz yelled, "Let's string him up! Let's string him up! Baby killer! Hang him!,"

Purcell police arrested the 48-year-old Schwartz and he was being held in the McClain County Jail.

As recently as March 31, Schwartz was in the Garvin County Jail. Records show he had been arrested on a complaint of auto theft.

But Garvin County Assistant District Attorney Dee Graves said that Schwartz was released on his own recognizance after authorities determined he was less dangerous than other inmates in a facility that is overcrowded.
