Big Dig Changes Commute
Storrow Drive Ramp Closed
BOSTON -- Commuters will find big traffic pattern changes
in Boston as part of the massive Big Dig highway
project.
Drivers trying to reach Interstate 93 or the Tobin Bridge from
Storrow Drive must now use the Leverett Connector. The old ramp
running from Storrow Drive to I-93 and the Tobin Bridge has closed
for good.
Big Dig officials said that closing the ramp lets them eliminate a
lane drop on the Central Artery, and allows three lanes of traffic
northbound over the Charles River.
Officials said that the lane drop has
been a traffic bottleneck since the busy highway opened in 1959.
"People will notice if they need to get on 93-North from Storrow Drive Levertt Circle area or the Tobin Bridge," Big Dig Spokesman Sean O'Neil said. "They will now only be able to take the Levertt Circle Connector Bridge. The old ramp behind the FleetCenter to the Tobin (Bridge) and to 93-North is now disconnected."
Another ramp from Ruthorford Avenue in Charlestown to Interstate
93 north has also closed permanently. It will be torn down so that
workers can connect the new Leonard Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge.
"We need to connect the new Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge to 93-North so that we can open it up in November of 2001," O'Neil said.
