The town of Saugus gathered Monday to remember a young Marine killed in Iraq during his second tour of duty.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Marine Cpl. Scott Procopio, 20, was killed in Iraq a little more than a week ago. The Marine's wake and funeral will be held at a local school, in the hopes of accommodating the throngs who want to pay their respects to the fallen hero.

Procopio, a 2003 Saugus High School graduate, was killed Sunday during combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

"The family has held up well through all of this. It is a terrible tragedy. What can you can you say? You have to be a parent or a sister or a brother to know what it's really like," said Saugus Town Manager Andrew Bisignani.

Procopio married his high school sweetheart, Kristal Cerbone, six months ago. She greeted mourners outside the Veteran's Memorial Elementary School.

The town of 28,000 residents has always remembered the victims of other wars by displaying the names with pride. Procopio was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

"He's one of ours. Scott was with us in this town, he's only 20 years old. He went to our Saugus High School. Met his wife there, his brother still goes there. They are a family with deep roots in the town," said high school Principal Vic Leone.

"We want everyone to know that he gave his life for his country and we're echoing the sentiments of the family in this regard. We hope this terrible war will end soon and all our servicemen will come home," Bisignani said.

Procopio will be buried at Riverside Cemetery with full military honors.
