Lawsuit Filed Against Boston Baby

Hundreds Of Customers Say Company Never Delivered Furniture

The Massachusetts attorney general's office filed a lawsuit Friday against the owner of Boston Baby.

NewsCenter 5's Susan Wornick reported that the lawsuit alleges that the company collected thousands of dollars from hundreds of expectant parents and never delivered or ordered the furniture the customers bought.

"We finally borrowed a cradle from a friend, and this is where she sleeps," said Tracy Guilbeault, of Pembroke.

The Guilbeaults have nothing to show from Boston Baby -- despite paying a nearly $1,800 deposit last November. The furniture never came.

"I definitely feel cheated, for sure," Guilbeault said.

After NewsCenter's Team 5 report last week, the attorney general's office began an investigation into allegations of fraud.

The office filed a lawsuit claiming Boston Baby collected $430,000 in deposits from 420 consumers for furniture that, in some cases, was never ordered.

Boston Baby is owned by Harvey Slobodkin, of Canton, who has not returned NewsCenter 5's phone calls, but earlier this week, an investigation found him working at his Avon warehouse.

Boston Baby has been in business for more than 10 years with stores in Danvers, Newton and Braintree.

The lawsuit freezes all company assets, stops Slobodkin from doing any business as Boston Baby, and even attaches his Canton home in an attempt to get restitution for consumers.

"You don't go out of business overnight, you know. You see it coming," Guilbeault said.

The attorney general's office received a temporary injunction on Friday, and the full case will be heard next week.

In the meantime, if you gave Boston Baby a deposit with a credit card, call your credit card company for a possible refund and file a formal complaint with the attorney general's office.
