BOSTON -- Expectant parents certainly weren't expecting this: the abrupt closing of Boston Baby. The popular furniture store closed its doors over the weekend.A Team 5 investigation revealed that for some customers, the timing of the closing could not be worse.NewsCenter 5's Susan Wornick reported that Patty Klinger's first daughter, Alexandra, is due in three months. But there is no telling when the nursery will be done.Klinger ordered practically everything from Boston Baby in Newton. She gave them a $500 deposit, but now can't get anyone to answer her calls. The Newton store is closed with a sign that says "Call customer service." But Team 5 tried to call the number and could not get through. The company headquarters in Avon is locked and a 19-year veteran of the company told Team 5 that he got his unemployment papers without notice on Monday."No I'm not happy about it. I have a wife and three children. But what is done is done," said Brian Nastasia, Boston Baby driver.Boston Baby is owned by Harvey Slobodkin, who has not yet filed for bankruptcy. But a Team 5 investigation shows a history of financial problems, including seven state liens filed and released between 2002 and 2005.Boston Baby is the latest store of its kind to close. The Baby Place in Natick liquidated last October, and BB Kids closed without warning in February.Klinger said she feels cheated, especially since there is no indication that even though they took her money in February, Boston Baby ever actually placed her order"I feel used. I feel like I was stolen from," Klinger said.Klinger put her deposit on a credit card and has applied for credit. Other Boston Baby customers are encouraged to call the attorney general's office.
