Using Public Transportation On The Fourth

Since parking may be difficult and many roads are closed Boston's Fourth of July organizers suggest that spectators use public transportation to get to the event.

Commuting Tips:
  • The MBTA will provides extra bus and subway service on July 4. But, you may want to buy your tokens in advance. You can check the MBTA Web site for scheduls and maps. Check the MBTA website for maps and schedules.
  • Visitor passes are also available online. A one day pass costs $6 and entitles riders unlimited travel on the Blue, Green, Orange, and Red lines, all local buses, zones 1A and 1B of the commuter rail system, and inner harbor ferries.

Directions to the T:

From the Esplanade
  • Red Line -- Charles Street Station: Walk along the Esplanade or Storrow Drive away from the back side of the Hatch Shell. The station is a few blocks up.
  • Green Line -- Arlington Street Station: Walk along Arlington Street away from the Esplanade; the station is just beyond the edge of the Public Garden at the intersection of Boylston Street. In addition to regular Green Line service, the MBTA runs express buses from the Arlington Street Station to the Riverside Station.
  • Green Line -- Copley Station: Walk along Clarendon Street about 4 blocks to Boylston and turn right one block. The station is at the intersection of Boylston and Dartmouth Streets adjacent to the Public Library.


  • From Memorial Drive
  • Red Line -- Kendall/MIT Station: Walk along Wadsworth Street and turn left on Main Street.
  • Green Line -- Lechmere Station: Walk up First Street to Msgr. O'Brien Highway at Cambridge Street and turn left.


  • Special Bus and Shuttle Service
  • Extra buses will run on routes 39 (Forest Hills Station --Back Bay Station via Copley Square) and 57 (Watertown Square -- Kenmore Station)
  • 25 special express buses run nonstop between Arlington Station and Riverside Station.
  • Shuttle buses will run between Charles Circle and Government Center.
  • Special RIDE shuttle vans are available to carry people with disabilities between Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital Lot no. 2 (accessed from Leverett Circle near the Charles Street ramp) and the Esplanade.


  • Commuter Boats
  • Charlestown and East Boston run on normal schedules.
  • The Hingham line does NOT run on July 4th.
