Fight Over Closed Archdiocese School Building Erupts Again

Parents Group Says Officials Have Reversed Position

In Boston's Brighton neighborhood Thursday there is new outrage aimed at the Archdiocese of Boston.

Parents who spent the past several months brokering a deal to buy a closed parochial school want to know why church officials have left the bargaining table.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly reported that parents said at the last moment the archdiocese reversed its position on selling the Our Lady of Presentation School to them for $2 million. The building remains vacant.

"Every time we look at it, it's a scar on our community. We want to heal that scar and we want to join hands with them to heal that scar and they refuse to do so," said parent Kevin Carragee.

Parents who watched the archdiocese close the school and lock their children out in 2004 helped raise money and negotiate with church leaders to buy the school and convert it into a community center.

"We have a need for adult education. We have a need for after-school programs, and it's amazing to me that they would rather sit and let a building rot and do nothing with it," parent Nancy Derosa said.

An archdiocese letter to members of the Presentation School Foundation, the group which was trying to buy the school, said pending litigation was in the way and the deal was off.

"Why do they have to dump this load of 'blank' on this community and on the city of Boston and they themselves rain on their own cardinal's parade?" Peter Borre of the Council of Parishes asked.

The neighborhood group said their struggle isn't over, however, because they want the building available for the use of the community.

"It's bigger than a fight with the archdiocese. It's about the very soul of our community here and we need that building for it," parent Fiona O'Brien said.

A spokesman for the archdiocese downplayed the situation saying in a prepared statement, "We have not been in formal negotiations with the Presentation School Foundation because of litigation filed against the archdiocese. We have been discussing their proposal with them because we believe that is what's best for the community."

The parents group said it will continue to try to bring the archdiocese back to the negotiation table.
