2006 BOSTON -- The museum at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library will open "A Journey Home -- John F. Kennedy and Ireland," a special exhibit dedicated to Kennedy's relationship to Ireland.NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported Wednesday that one day before the opening, a number of new Americans were sworn in.David and Deirdre Hughes used to be citizens of Ireland."If you are going to live in this country, we wanted to have the rights that American citizens have. Very proud day," David Hughes said."There were 60 different countries in there today, and five of us were Irish. It's a small amount, but people were from all over the world," Deirdre Hughes said. Many of the 200 who were naturalized at the library brought the pride of their ancestors. More than 40 years ago, Kennedy celebrated his eight Irish great-grandparents, as thousands in Ireland welcomed him home.Thousands turned out in Dublin and in the village where the Kennedy family had a farm. The museum unveiled never-before-seen pieces, such as a Waterford crystal vase with etchings of the Kennedy family cottage in Ireland, an immigrant ship and the White House."It encapsulates the story of the Kennedy family as they originated in Ireland and as JFK ended up in the White House," John F. Kennedy Presidential Library spokesman Frank Rigg said. Copyright 2007 by TheBostonChannel.com. All rights reserved.
