BOURNE, Mass. -- Colognes, perfumes, scented deodorants and body sprays may soon be banned at the Upper Cape Regional Technical High School in Bourne.NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that officials are considering a fragrance-free policy because the scents can trigger everything from asthma attacks to headaches.School officials said there have been a few instances when the smell of perfume and cologne has been overpowering."We do have some staff members and some students who have chemical sensitivity and can be impacted, and, in some respects, have been impacted," Superintendent Barry Motta said. The school's nurse, Lisa Schmitt , said there have been few instances when too much fragrance has caused problems."(Students affected report) difficulty breathing, needing to get fresh air, headache. If they have the proper documentation in place, I'd give then Tylenol or Motrin for their headache," she said. Students said they could do without the fragrance ban."I don’t want it because, like, I want to go to school smelling good," one student said."It's just a bad idea," another student said. But one former Upper Cape Tech student wished he went to a fragrance-free school."I guess the reason why I am partial to fragrance-free is because I grew up allergic to fragrance and it would give me a headache," he said.If a subcommittee and the school board approve the ban, it could go into effect as early as the 2007 academic year.
