A Tewksbury police officer was treated for a gunshot wound Wednesday following a police pursuit that ended in Billerica.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the incident began at about 11 a.m. after an alleged robbery at a Mobil gas station on Route 133 in Tewksbury. Police said that Joseph Croteau stormed into the gas station and stole an undisclosed amount of money.

A gas station employee called the police, who chased Croteau into Billerica, where he crashed his van.

"The suspect exited the vehicle, refused to surrender. A short struggle ensued during which a firearm was discharged. A Tewksbury officer received a non-life threatening would to the leg," Billerica Police Department Chief Daniel Rosa said.

The officer, Brian O'Neil, 24, was shot with his own gun. Croteau, of Lowell, was taken into custody, police said.

"Right now, the preliminary reports are that (O'Neil) handled himself in a professional manner. It's a superficial wound, and we are happy that he is going to be OK," Tewksbury Police Department Chief Al Donovan said.

Croteau is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Lowell District Court.
