New Bedford police are still searching for the man who allegedly walked into a gay bar early Thursday morning and began attacking patrons with a hatchet and handgun.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that investigators have learned a lot more about the events that took place after the attack at the Puzzles Lounge on North Front Street. The police blotter says that the suspect, identified as Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford, arrived home about 1 a.m. Thursday and his mother said he was bleeding profusely from the head. He then left in her green, 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, which police are now looking for. Officers said Robida is armed and possibly suicidal.

"Obviously, we have a man who is dangerous, who's not rational and who's got weapons. Yeah, I'd be fearful too. I think anyone should be," Bristol County District Attorney Paul Walsh Jr. said.

Police want to question Robida in connection with the attacks on three men in the Puzzles Lounge, which caters to the gay community. In Robida's bedroom, police said they found skinhead paraphernalia, along with a makeshift coffin. On his Internet profile, where he displayed a Nazi symbol, he wrote, "I'm interested in death, destruction, chaos, filth and greed."

Under heavy police protection, a crowd of about 150 gathered at the Puzzles Lounge for a vigil Thursday night. The bartender, who's the only person to have spoken with the alleged gunman, said his only question was, "Is this a gay bar?" Then, the attacker took out a hatchet, a machete and a handgun and began assaulting patrons at random. Three men were shot or stabbed.

"He's standing face to face with me and, maybe three feet away, he puts a gun to my head, just squints his eyes and pulls the trigger and, it clicked. He had no bullets," bartender Phillip Daggett said.

Residents who live near the bar were shaken.

"I think it's frightening, I think it's scary, but I think it also draws us together, to say, 'What's wrong? What's wrong with this young man? What's wrong with our society?'" Andy Pollock said.

All three of the unidentified victims were in critical condition in the hospital.
