CONCORD, Mass. -- A 42-year teaching veteran in Maynard, Mass., pleaded not guilty to child rape charges Monday.NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Joseph Magno, 65, was arrested on Friday, accused of assaulting a male student. The longtime Maynard High School teacher and founder of the audio and visual club was arraigned in his bed at Emerson Hospital in Concord Monday. He has been complaining of chest and other problems since his arrest Friday and spent the weekend in the hospital under police guard. The charges are being brought by a senior at the high school who said the improper sexual assaults started when he was in the eighth grade and continued until he was in the 10th grade. Officials are investigating why the student waited to file the charges."In those five years, Joseph Magno and this family, this person and his mother, have been very close friends. They went to Florida together; they went on trips. This is all supposed to have happened after he was raped," defense attorney Don DeMayo said.In addition to rape, Magno pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years old and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14.The judge ordered Magno held on $250,000 bail at least until a dangerousness hearing is held on Wednesday.
