Danvers hockey team celebrates state championshipThe High 5 Athletes for Friday, March 23, is the state champion Danvers High boys ice hockey team. The Falcons completed a Cinderella-like run with an amazing comeback victory over Boston Latin in last Sunday's Division 2 State Final at the FleetCenter. The Falcons improbably rallied from one-goal deficits not once, not twice -- but three times against mighty Latin. Then, with 51 seconds left, Bryan Duggan gave Danvers its first lead of the game. The Falcons made that lead stick for those forever-long final ticks of the clock, and the state championship plaque was theirs. It was just rewards for one of the most consistently strong programs in the state. Mike Lynch chats with Danvers goal hero Bryan Duggan. Video See Mike Lynch's Report "They left everything on the ice in that third period," Falcons coach Kevin Flynn said. "The only lead we had was for those final 51 seconds, but those are the ones that count the most, I guess." What adds to the tale is the story of Duggan, who was speared in the first period and wasn't sure if he would return. "But I wasn't going to go out like that," Duggan said -- and returned to score the game-winner. High 5, a weekly look at a Massachusetts high school athlete, is in its 16th year of providing Channel 5 viewers an indepth look at one of the Bay State's finest.
