Lynn police have launched an investigation into who put a hidden, wireless camera in a Honey Dew Donuts bathroom.

NewsCenter 5's David Boeri reported that an employee of the doughnut shop discovered the camera concealed in a roll of toilet paper in the women's restroom and turned it over to police.

"It was in the spare toilet roll, inside the roll, facing the toilet," said Lynn police Detective Joseph Chadbourne.

"Inside the toilet paper, she found the camera, wireless camera," said Lynn police Lt. Dave Brown.

The camera found at the 435 Lynnway restaurant was about 1.5 inches long and was connected to a 9-volt battery. Police are still investigating who installed the camera and for what purpose.

Police said the camera had nothing to do with the surveillance system at the restaurant and the company's corporate office in Plainville, Mass., issued a prepared statement saying it was doing everything it could to cooperate with police.

A surveillance camera expert said the camera has a short range.

"Micro-miniature (cameras) have a short range, intended for some close-up looking and intended to be transferred to some kind of recording device so it could be recorded and looked at a different time," said Arthur Bourke, of Surveillance Specialties.

Police say their are following up on some leads.

"My daughter works here on the weekends and I'm concerned that I don’t want my daughter making the front page of somebody's Web page somewhere," said Scott Sentner.

Under a recent state law it is misdemeanor to conduct surveillance of someone who has an expectation of privacy and would be nude or semi-nude. It is a felony to distribute or transmit any pictures of video so taken.
