Police have made an arrest in connection with a series of bank robberies in the greater Boston area.

NewsCenter 5's Mary Saladna reported that police received a tip Tuesday night that Joseph Hart, of Somerville, Mass., was the man they were looking for. Hart was arrested walking down Concord Street in Charlestown, Mass., Wednesday afternoon.

Hart, 20, was robbing banks to support a drug habit, police say. Hart's girlfriend and alleged getaway driver, Jennifer Sheehan, 20, was also arrested.

"We had some information that he was getting ready to surrender, we had not seen him and due to the public safety factor, we had the opportunity to take him off the street and we did so," said Winchester, Mass., police Lt. James Pierce.

The robber, dubbed the "Average Joe" robber, most recently hit a Somerville bank on Monday. He is suspected in at least 11 other area bank robberies.

A robbery task force was created to try to figure out how to catch him. Police said he has been so successful because he blends in so well with other bank customers.

I believe he thought it worked and he kept going until it didn’t work," Pierce said.

Hart and Sheehan were arrested for an Oct. 4 robbery in Winchester. Charges connected to several other robberies are pending, police say.

The robber was described as having a thin build, in his early- to mid-20s, about 6 feet tall with short brown hair and glasses. He always wore a baseball cap.

On Tuesday, 21 investigators from state, federal and local departments compared photos and notes on the robber.

There have been no injuries during the incidents, but police feared the robberies could escalate to violence.

Hart and Sheehan will be arraigned in Woburn District Court Thursday.
