Two teenage sisters were killed in an overnight car crash in Southborough.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the girls were in a sport utility vehicle that hit a utility pole on Northborough Road around 1 a.m. The cause of the accident and whether or not the girls were wearing seat beats remains under investigation.

The victims have been identified as Shauna Murphy, 17, and Meghan Murphy, 15, of Southborough.

"On arrival, (police) found a motor vehicle that had been traveling in an eastward direction that had struck a telephone pole on the southern side of Northborough Road. That impact resulted in the fatality of two of the occupants of the vehicle and serious personal injury to a third occupant," said Southborough police Officer David Hagen.

The third girl, Melissa Smith, 15, of Northborough, was transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., where she underwent surgery Thursday.

"My body is numb because I just seen it, and I just heard a voice like, 'Please help me.' It is like, just to hear it, knowing, makes it tough. I had just finished my shift. It makes it tough because they were so young," said witness Wendell Boykins.

The Murphy family declined comment Thursday.

Grief counselors were on hand at Algonquin Regional High School Thursday, where all three went to school.

"You just care about these kids. It is the worst news that a teacher or an educator can get -- to have this kind of tragedy occur," said Northborough Public Schools Superintendent Robert Couture.

The crash knocked out power in Southborough for a short time, but service has been restored.

The family has set up a scholarship at Algonquin Regional High School in the girls' memory.
