The Bay State's medical community is reaching out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that the Massachusetts General Hospital has loaded up a truck with supplies ready to head for the storm-ravaged region. The 35-member team is waiting for the call to head south.

The truck is loaded with generators, monitors, oxygen reconstituters, gauze, sponges and sutures -- supplies to create a fully-operational field hospital with operating room capability.

"We have a full pharmacy pack designed to give you everything you need for 72 hours and re-supply is needed. That is all rolled up and prepackaged. All we need to add at the last minute is refrigerables and narcotics," said Dr. Susan Briggs, of Mass General.

Briggs led the MGH team to the earthquake in Iran in 2003 and to Ground Zero after the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. She said the challenge on the Gulf Coast is providing every day care.

"Taking care of traumatic injuries is easy. You can plan for it. What you can't plan for is all the people with heart attacks and lung problems," she said.

A team from the University of Massachusetts at Worcester Medical Center is already in Alabama providing care.
