Suspicious Object Prompts Strip Mall Evacuation

BEDFORD, Mass. -- Police evacuated a strip mall in Bedford early Thursday morning after receiving a warning about a suspicious object at a Stop & Shop store on Great Road.NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that no threat was issued against the grocery store, and no injuries were reported."I noticed a strange item in the carriage and notified the store management and they pushed it outside," said store vendor Charles Bachini.Investigators arrived on the scene after getting the call about 8:30 a.m. The store is located at 337 Great Road.A state police bomb squad member pulled the shopping cart where the device was found slowly away from the building and crews used a remote weapon to destroy it."I was more focusing on what to do to stay safe if something happens. My initial reaction was a little upset, but once I got outside, I was a little more relaxed," said shopper Nancy Tripodi.It is unknown if there were explosives inside the device."It was approximately 8 inches long, crimped on both ends, copper, water tight copper pipe," said Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Robert Bachelder. "It was just sitting in the carriage that was originally in the Super Stop & Shop."An investigation by state police and arson squad is under way. Stop & Shop did not comment on the incident. All other businesses in the plaza reopened late Thursday morning.
