Silverline Windows Statement

"The discoloration or distortion of vinyl siding due to the effects of light being reflected by windows requires a unique and very rare set of simultaneous events and circumstances.

The first requirement is for the sealed insulated glass unit in the window to be highly reflective to the sun's energy, for example a unit with low emissivity glass, a popular energy saving glass type, which is used to reduce heating and cooling costs. The second requirement is that surface of the reflecting insulated glass unit must be slightly concave, even when exposed to the heat of the sun's radiation. Every sealed insulated glass unit in an installed window will be somewhat convex or concave, due to the heating or cooling effect of the air temperature and solar radiation. The phenomenon of siding discoloration requires a concave glass unit in combination with a series of other elements, as described below, which cause this unusual occurrence.

The curvature of the reflecting glass surface can cause the reflected light rays from the sun to converge toward some point, referred to as the focal point. Beyond that point, the light rays begin to diverge and dissipate to a wider area. Right at or very near to the focal point the intensity of the sun's light becomes very concentrated. This concentration of light energy can raise the temperature of some lighter vinyl siding materials enough to cause discoloration or slight distortion.

In addition, other physical circumstances related to the geographic location of and proximity of the homes involved must exist concurrently to allow this phenomenon to happen. The distance from the reflecting window to the neighboring vinyl siding must be very near the focal point. A few feet closer or farther away and the concentration would be greatly diminished and have no effect. The orientation of the window to the path of the sun and the position of the sun in the sky must both be exactly positioned to direct the reflection onto the adjacent home. It is extremely rare that all of these factors can coincide and create this highly unlikely phenomenon.

As noted in our previous statement, Silver Line stands behind all of our products and is working closely with the homeowner to insure their complete satisfaction."
