There are more problems for the Big Dig, according to officials.

NewsCenter 5's Steve Sbraccia reported that two more leaks have been discovered in an area under the Massachusetts Turnpike near the Fort Point Channel.

The Fort Point Channel tunnel was constructed by shoving steel boxes through the earth and now, it's leaking up to 30 gallons of water a minute at one of the joints.

The latest trouble has sparked prompt reaction from the governor and the attorney general.

Attorney General Thomas Reilly said he first learned of the leak Thursday and was both surprised and disappointed that he was not told earlier.

Massachusetts Turnpike Authority spokeswoman Mariellen Burns downplayed the problem in a statement saying the leak, "total is about 20-30 gallons a minute, which is a manageable amount for our 11 pumping stations which handle 1,000 to 1,300 gallons a minute."

"However the (turnpike) views it, we see it as a significant problem," said Reilly. "The sheer volume of water is significant."

The fact that the news of the leaks was kept secret until now also bothers the governor, who renewed his calls for the turnpike's chairman to step down.

"His reluctance to be forthcoming should be enough to remove him," said Gov. Mitt Romney.

Another aspect of the leak that is a concern to officials is the possibility that the running water has caused other damage in the tunnel. Officials are awaiting a report from the turnpike authority on that.
