BOSTON -- There is a new landmark joining the gas tanks along the Southeast Expressway.
Crews in Boston began installing a wind turbine along the highway Thursday.International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union Local 103 and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative partnered to install the city's first commercial-scale wind turbine."Tens of thousands of commuters are going to see this and get more comfortable and understand what renewable energy is all about and that there is an opportunity for clean energy in the state," said James Christo of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. The turbine, that stands about 150 feet tall, can produce enough electricity to power about 25 homes. Some of the power generated by the turbine will go to power an IBEW training facility at the site. The project costs about $500,000, with some of the funding coming from MTC through the state's state’s Renewable Energy Trust Fund. The trust supports hundreds of projects that generate new clean electricity, jobs and build more energy efficient green schools that use renewable technologies.
