PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man who allegedly shot and killed a Rhode Island detective inside a police station was ordered held without bail Monday on a murder charge.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the alleged shooter, Esteban Carpio, 26, appeared in a Providence courtroom wearing a protective plastic mask for injuries to his face. Providence police say the injuries were self-inflicted, but his family claimed police brutality.Carpio is a former resident of Roslindale and attended Weston High School. Several family members had to be escorted from the courtroom."They had to put a mask on him to protect his face from the beating, the police brutality. He needed help and he couldn’t get it, and we tried and tried," said Carpio's aunt, Delores.Carpio is charged with the murder of Detective James Allen. He allegedly shot Allen twice with his service revolver inside the Providence police station."During questioning of this defendant by James Allen of the Providence Police Department, this defendant initiated an unprovoked attack on the officer. He overcame the officer, removed his revolver and shot the officer twice," said prosecutor Paul Daley.Allen died shortly after the shooting. Police say Carpio's injuries occurred after he jumped from a third-floor window of the police station after the shooting."He jumped out of a third-story window. And he struggled in a tough struggle to be apprehended on the ground. When I saw him, he was pretty cut up. I know we took him to the hospital; I know he was brought back here. More than that, I don't know," said Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman.Allen's funeral is set for Thursday at St. Thomas Church in Providence. Allen, 50, leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
