More than 250 police departments across the commonwealth are teaming up with the State Police in an effort to crack down on aggressive drivers in the Bay State and they know where they're most likely to find them.

According to lists released by by state safety officials Monday, drivers in Saugus, Mass., got the most tickets for aggressive driving between 2000 and 2003, followed by Braintree and Quincy, Mass.

Although Boston drivers were issued the largest number of tickets for aggressive driving, those tickets still amounted to only 3.3 percent of the total tickets issued in the Hub. Aggressive driving tickets accounted for more than 12 percent of all the tickets in Saugus.

The state says while aggressive driving tickets accounted for only 4.7 percent of all tickets issued in the state, they accounted for 11 percent of all tickets issued in crash situations.

The worst towns for crash citations due to aggressive driving are on Cape Cod, with 24.6 percent of the total issued in Falmouth, Mass., connected to road rage. More than 18 percent of Yarmouth's crash citations were related to aggressive driving, with Bourne, Hingham and Gloucester close behind.

State safety agencies are kicking off a "Road Respect" mobilization by also releasing the results of a recent safety survey done by the Governor's Highway Safety Bureau. The phone survey of males ages 18 to 34 showed that the vast majority have been victims of aggressive driving, but the majority admit to aggressive driving themselves. More than 65 percent admitted speeding up at yellow lights, and 85 percent said they exceed speed limits.

Public safety officials identified tailgating, switching lanes without signaling, rolling through stop signs, and excessive speeding as a few examples of aggressive driving.

State and local police issued approximately 148,000 citations related to aggressive driving between 2000 and 2003, 17,950 of which involved a crash.

The state is releasing lists of the top 25 communities in Massachusetts with the most aggressive driving citations issued between 2000 and 2003, as well as the list of top 25 communities with aggressive driving-related crash citations
