Big Dig officials spoke out Friday about their investigation into the project's leaks.

NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported that progress continues inspecting wall panels after a big leak last September shut down the tunnel near South Station.

Of 43 new locations, only one small leak was detected 100 yards from the original problem.

"Dampness is expected in our slurry wall specifications; wetness is not. It is a wet area, and we just need the repair done," Big Dig project manager Keith Sibley said.

Meanwhile, there will be some major traffic shifts starting this weekend.

"We are actually shifting Atlantic Avenue from where it currently sits along the eastern side of the alignment. We are moving it into what has been a construction work site," Big Dig project director Mike Lewis said.

In order to finish the final restoration of Atlantic Avenue from Congress Street to the Boston Harbor Hotel, starting this weekend, traffic to South Boston will take a left immediately after Exit 23.

The move is being made before the Congress Street Bridge has to be closed for repairs.

"The good news is that it is easier for the short-term. If we were not to do this, and Congress Street were closed, then all traffic would have to double back up onto the Moakley Bridge, or continue south to Sumner Street," Lewis said.
