Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors in the same places you put smoke alarms – one on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.
  • Keep furnace vent pipes clear of snow.
  • Have appliances installed by professionals.
  • Have heating systems (including chimneys and vents) inspected and serviced annually by a trained technician.
  • Don't run snow blowers or cars inside the garage, even with the door open.
  • Ovens are not designed to provide heat; misusing them this way will put large amounts of carbon monoxide into the home.
  • Unvented kerosene heaters are illegal in Massachusetts because of the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Use generators outdoors only.
