Install carbon monoxide detectors in the same places you put smoke alarms – one on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Keep furnace vent pipes clear of snow. Have appliances installed by professionals. Have heating systems (including chimneys and vents) inspected and serviced annually by a trained technician. Don't run snow blowers or cars inside the garage, even with the door open. Ovens are not designed to provide heat; misusing them this way will put large amounts of carbon monoxide into the home. Unvented kerosene heaters are illegal in Massachusetts because of the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Use generators outdoors only. Signs of Trouble If you have any of these signs of trouble, contact a technician to service the appliance.
Decreasing hot water supply. Furnace unable to heat house or runs constantly. Sooting, especially on appliances or vents. Unfamiliar or burning odor. Increased condensation inside windows.
