QUINCY, Mass. -- A 16-year-old has led police to a baby Jesus statue that was stolen from a nativity scene in Quincy this week. But the way the statue was found was what had one boater a little surprised Friday morning.
The teenager told police that he threw the statue into the water behind a CVS Pharmacy on Southern Artery in Town River, although he did not admit to stealing it. Because the baby Jesus is plastic, it floated and the former Quincy, Mass., harbormaster who retrieved the statue, Steve MacDonald, said he found it right-side-up on a rock, just like it would have been positioned in a nativity scene. He took out a small boat and searched for the statue on his own.
The Patriot Ledger newspaper had been offering a $1,000 reward for the return of the statue. The money will be split between an anonymous tipster who gave the location and McDonald. It's the second time the statue has been stolen. Besides a few broken fingers, it was found intact. The teen who threw it into the water hasn't been charged, but he is being held on unrelated, outstanding warrants.
