Boston Accent Causes Problems For Phone Co.
Officials Say Equipment Can Learn Accent

BOSTON -- Boston's famous accent is causing some problems for the phone company -- specifically Verizon's new, automated 411 service. Apparently the computer is having a tough time deciphering the accent, so people are getting frustrated and complaining to Verizon when they end up getting the wrong number. But Verizon officials told the Boston Herald that the speech-recognition technology they use is state-of-the-art and can actually learn the accent. As the computer gets more use it can learn different pronunciations of cities and towns, they said.
