NORWOOD, Mass. -- A high school student in Norwood died after being struck by a car while walking to school Friday morning. Police say the driver faces several charges.NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that Allison White, 14, was crossing Chapel Street at about 7:30 a.m. Friday when she and a friend were hit.
The driver of the car was identified as Amanda Hayes, 32. She will face charges of vehicular homicide, operating a motor vehicle negligently and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Hayes, who was treated for stress at Norwood Hospital, will appear in Dedham District Court at a later date. The accident occurred while both the teen and the driver who allegedly hit her were on their way to school, one a student at Norwood High School, the other Norwood woman who is a teacher at a Canton, Mass., middle school. "One of the girls was struck, briefly grazed. She was taken to Norwood Hospital for treatment. The second girl was struck head on, she hit the windshield of the vehicle and was thrown from the vehicle," Norwood police officer Paul Bishop said.White had head injuries and internal trauma. She was pronounced dead after being taken by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital. The other girl was treated at Norwood Hospital for a leg injury. The accident remains under investigation and police said no charges have been filed at this point. They said they will do an accident reconstruction to try to determine what happened. They said it's not clear how fast the car was going. The driver did not have a stop sign."There seems to be several things we want to look into at this time before we make any determination as to a result. You can see there are a lot of factors here that need to be taken in to consideration. The sun coming up over the horizon is one of them," said Bishop. Some of White's classmates visited the scene after receiving grief counseling at school."She was loved by everyone, she had a lot of friends," said one teen.
