A Melrose man arrested Wednesday at a Boston hotel where Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was speaking said that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

NewsCenter 5's Steve Sbraccia reported that police arrested him after finding out the man had failed to register as a sex offender.

Officials do not believe that Ransom Rowe, 33, was stalking the senator, but with the atmosphere surrounding the Democratic National Convention, his presence raised some red flags.

"I have made no attempt to contact Hillary Clinton in person or by e-mail and I was not attempting to stalk Hillary," Rowe said.

Rowe was arrested in the lobby of the Park Plaza Hotel.

"I was inquiring if this was the right hotel where I was to meet a date who was attending a Hillary Clinton event," Rowe said.

According to the Boston Herald, Rowe told security guards that he had been e-mailing Clinton all week.

"He made statements to the security guards and other people at the hotel," Boston Police Department Supt. James Claiborne said.

Boston police said that Rowe was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Police said that Rowe was classified as a Level 1 offender -- the lowest rank.

"It was a non-violent offense when I was 15 years old. Because it was a juvenile offense, I'm not required to register, but I am cooperating and registering at this time as this is under appeal," Rowe said.

Rowe said that even the issuance of the warrant could be a mistake in paperwork. He said that he believes that he was registered and has a letter from the sex offender registry board confirming that he was registered.
