WESTON, Mass. -- Pastors from across the Boston Archdiocese met with Archbishop Sean O'Malley in Weston Thursday to discuss the recent church closings.
NewsCenter 5's David Boeri reported that the meeting comes one day after the Vatican announced that Cardinal Bernard F. Law was chosen for a new job in the Holy City."I think it's amazing that the day after the people hear about their parishes being ordered to be closed to pay for the cover of the sexual abuse and financial mismanagement that Cardinal Law is being rewarded by the pope. A lateral move or not, this is adding fuel to fire that is already burning in people. It is an utter disgrace," the Rev. Robert Bowers said.
O'Malley met with pastors of 65 parishes. The reasons offered for the necessity of closing parishes ranged from parish attendance to deteriorating church buildings."I came to ask a few questions because the letter which we received does not state adequate reasons for closing our parish. We don't meet any of the criteria that were listed by the archbishop. The reasons given are not acceptable to our community, so I'd like to know what the real reasons are," the Rev. Stephen Josoma said. After priests went into the meeting, none of them was available for comment. Representatives for O'Malley made it clear that no one from the archdiocese would be available for question after the meeting.
