Commuter Changes During DNC

POSTED: 3:46 pm EDT May 20, 2004

Here are the major traffic and commuter changes planned for the week of the Democratic National Convention. All highway, tunnel, bridge and ramp closings are July 26-29, from approximately 4 p.m. until after midnight.

  • Interstate 93 will be closed from exit 32 in Medford, just north of Boston, to Exit 20, which connects to the Massachusetts Turnpike just south of downtown.
  • Northbound entrance ramps will be closed from the southern intersection of I-93 and 95, in Canton, to the Mass Pike.
  • Southbound entrance ramps will be blocked from the northern 95/93 interchange, in Woburn, down to exit 32 in Medford.
  • Eastbound Storrow Drive lanes from Western Avenue to North Station will be closed.
  • The Sumner Tunnel and Tobin Bridge will be closed.
  • Travel will be reduced to one lane on Route 1 north of Boston.
  • The Mass Pike eastbound, from Allston to East Boston, will have lane restrictions.
  • North Station will be closed for a full week, from July 23-30. The four commuter rail lines from the north will stop outside the city and riders will be bused into Boston. Subways will not stop at North Station.
  • Car pool lanes on I-93 will also be closed from July 23-30. They will be used as 24-hour dedicated lanes for emergency vehicles and pre-designated MBTA buses.
  • Inner harbor commuter ferries from Lovejoy Wharf in downtown Boston will be suspended for the entire week, July 23-30.
